Active Brownfield Reuse planning underway with city and neighborhood groups

In May 2002, Watermark Environmental, Inc. was awarded a firm-fixed price, five-year contract for the Operation and Maintenance of the Groundwater Treatment Plant located at the Silresim Superfund Site in Lowell, MA.  The principals of Watermark have been involved at this challenging site since the treatment facility was constructed in 1994.  System components include 31 extraction wells, phase separation, metals removal, pressure filtration, air stripping, thermal oxidation for off-gas treatment and a filter press system for sludge handling.

The site soil and groundwater exhibits extremely high levels of VOCs, SVOCs, heavy metals and to a lesser extent pesticides, PCBs and dioxin.  The extremely high levels of volatile compounds require that much of the work at the site be completed in Level C and B personnel protection.  This project involves intensive O&M of the extraction system and treatment plant equipment; soil, air and groundwater sampling and analysis; hazardous waste handling, transportation and disposal; contaminant migration modeling using 3D simulation software; and improvements to the facility and site necessary to enhance the management of contaminant migration.

Watermark is working closely with the City's Division of Planning and Development and neighborhood groups to examine Brownfield redevelopment options as part of the Tanner Street Redevelopment Initiative.
